Russell, Kansas

We left Colorado Springs this morning heading east and the temperature is HOT, HOT, Hot! We'll spend a few days in Kansas -- doing research on Joan's family in Emporia -- and then move to Jefferson City and St. Louis, Missouri to visit friends.

Lake Cocheti

Cochiti Lake
Sandoval County, New Mexico
June 27, 2009

The US Army Corps of Engineers maintains a dam holding back 1200 acres of water as a flood and sediment control project on the Rio Grande River.

Joan bought a 1-day fishing license and worms and spent several hours with her line in the water. The other men and women had been there longer and had no success – the fish weren’t biting for the locals or the visitors.

Zach and Bob observed the lack of action from a shaded picnic area while Joan tried her best. Joan: 0; fish: 1.

Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument
Los Alamos, NM 87544

Cave dwellings carved into the cliffs in the Los Alamos area north of Santa Fe provided many opportunities to photograph the archeological remnants of Native American culture. It is said that the Pueblo people came into the area over 10,000 years ago.

The park is a pleasant area with shaded paved walks and many opportunities to climb into the dwellings in which the people lived in the hand-carved caves. It was amazing to see the way that people lived in the safety of the caves and the technology they used.

The beehive shaped clay structure is a common sight in parts of the west. The clay oven, used for centuries, can still be found in front or rear yards and is a practical solution for cooking in a warm climate.

Los Alamos Rocks

There was little room to stop on the road to photograph these dramatic rock formations. We pulled into a parking lot outside a restricted area and Bob walked along the road to get these shots.

Camel Rock - Santa Fe, New Mexico

Camel Rock

This unique rock formation is just off the highway and easy to reach for photographs. New Mexico’s overpasses are very appealing with southwestern themes and difficult to capture with a camera when traveling at 60 miles per hour.

Petroglyphs in New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM
Petroglyph National Monument
June 23, 2009

The grafitti of today becomes a historical record when viewed in the future. Drawings carved in or marked on stone in the Petroglyph National Monument north of Albuquerque were made by Native Americans, Spanish soldiers, missionaries and other people passing through the area.

The trail was easy walking and the images that were initially difficult to see became easy to spot. The heat wore out Zach and we didn’t cover the entire tour but we did appreciate the preservation efforts for this unique spot.

Historic Route 66 - Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque -- Route 66
June 13, 2009

Route 66 in Albuquerque is still vibrant but some of the old businesses have closed. A number of motel ruins are visible and attest to the glory of the old “Mother Road”.

Old Route 66 parallels US 40 at the western area of Albuquerque. A small section of the original road is preserved at the narrow Rio Puerco Bridge. The bridge -- open for pedestrians -- is narrow by today’s standards. Wide vehicles would have taken up too much space for other vehicles to pass comfortably.

The Road Runner Diner in Laguna has a varied menu with large portions and an attractive gift shop. It’s next to a Native American Casino and attracts both visitors and truckers. The photos below show wall murals that evoke a fifties feeling.

Route 6 from Laguna to Los Lunas, NM is a fairly deserted and meandering stretch of 34 miles. The ranch entrance and the remains of a house shown below are just off Route 6.

Enchanted Trails
June 20-29, 2009

Camp sites vary in appearances and amenities. The place that we stayed at, Enchanted Trails Camping Resort, off US 40 was comfortable and close to wherever we need to travel.

The old car and teardrop camper on display fit in with the Historic Route 66 theme along US 40. Frequent rain – in advance of the monsoon season – brought out the flowers on the cactus plants.
