Oatman Arizona along Historic Route 66

June 5, 2010
Incredible Road to Old Mining Town

Oatman is located between 28 miles West of Kingman, Arizona.  The next town, Needles, California is 22 miles away.  Oatman is really out of the way and other than mining companies and rugged landscape, there's little to see.

(F) Needles, CA

Historic Route 66 from Kingman to Oatman is a narrow, twisting two-lane road with very little shoulder on the outside.  The rugged terrain looks as if it could be a moon scape.

The town of Oatman is a resurrected ghost town complete with mules that miners left when prospecting became unprofitable.

The mules have become quite adept at mooching carrots and other handouts from visitors.  A few vendors sell a bunch of carrots for a dollar.

Gift shops are all over the smal ltown and there's even a hotel.
Harvey was decorating a barrel for a gold-panning attraction.  One of his many muralsin town is shown below.
